Helping to Keep Your Side-by-Side in Top-Notch Shape

With the ATV and UTV community rapidly expanding, more people than ever are enjoying the excitement of off-roading. A growing number of people are also discovering the utility features these vehicles bring to the table. Though side-by-sides have plenty to offer, they’re also subjected to extensive use and abuse. Keeping them in top-notch shape is the key to getting the most use out of them. Maintenance and certain upgrades can help make these vehicles last as long as possible and ensure they serve their owners well along the way.

    Install an Aftermarket Roll Cage

One way to increase a side-by-side’s durability and longevity is to ramp up its structural integrity. These vehicles are often subjected to hard work, harsh terrain, and adverse conditions. From heavy loads and rough roads to crashes and rollovers, they’re prone to serious damage. That’s where an aftermarket razor roll cage comes into play. It’ll provide an added layer of protection against flips, low-lying limbs, and other hazards, safeguarding the vehicle’s occupants and its interior. Installing an upgraded roll cage can prevent a great deal of damage and help make a side-by-side last longer.

    Regular Inspections

Regularly inspecting a UTV can help keep it in optimal shape as well. Perform thorough inspections of the vehicle before and after each ride to catch minor problems before they have a chance to cause more extensive damage. Check the tires for wear and tear. Look at the vehicle’s fluid levels, including engine and gear oil, coolant, and brake fluid. Check for loose bolts, frame damage, and other problems.

Be sure to inspect the important systems of the side-by-side too. Check radiator hoses as well as the radiator itself for signs of damage or leaks. Examine the suspension and steering components for wear, including the shocks, bushings, and steering linkage. Look at the brake pads and rotors, and check all the vehicle’s belts for dry rot, tears, fraying, and proper tension. Look over the hoses for cracks and other problems. Ensure that the lights are working properly. All these measures may delay the ride a bit and require a little extra work after riding, but they’ll go a long way toward keeping a side-by-side running and minimizing serious issues.

    Oil Changes

As is the case with all vehicles, side-by-sides require regular oil changes. They’ll keep the engine running smoothly and help to prevent damage. In general, oil changes are recommended every six months or 1,000 miles, but that could vary depending on the type of UTV in question. Be sure to use the correct type of oil in the vehicle, and don’t overlook the importance of regularly changing the oil filter. If an oil filter is clogged, it can’t remove contaminants from the oil and protect the engine as well as it should.

    Air Filter Changes

Air filter maintenance is also an important aspect of side-by-side upkeep. A clean air filter leads to optimal engine performance and efficiency. It also helps to minimize engine damage. Routinely cleaning or changing the air filter will help to keep a side-by-side running properly while protecting its engine and other components. This is especially important for UTVs that are constantly subjected to excessive dirt and dust.

    Battery Upkeep

Battery upkeep is equally important. UTV batteries could be considered disposable because they have to be replaced from time to time, but proper maintenance can make them last longer. Check the battery terminals and cable ends for corrosion, and clean them if necessary. If the cables are damaged, replace them. Keep in mind that some batteries require more attention than others. Don’t take for granted that the battery is self-maintained; if it’s a maintainable battery, be sure to add water to its electrolytes as needed to keep it in good condition and working correctly.

    Lubricating Parts

Certain side-by-side components need to remain lubricated as well. Those include joints, pivots, tie rods, and wheel bearings to name a few. Failing to lubricate those moving parts as needed could result in excessive wear and expensive damage. It’ll detract from the life of the side-by-side too. Take the extra time to check all those components and grease them if necessary to further extend a UTV’s functionality and longevity.

    Routine Cleaning

Keeping a side-by-side clean is another important part of maintenance. Don’t let dirt and mud build up on the body parts or the mechanical and electrical components. Routinely washing the UTV will help prevent unnecessary wear. It’ll also help to keep the vehicle running properly and minimize the need to repair or replace its parts. Consider using protectants to preserve the body parts as well. Though scratched, faded body parts don’t detract from a vehicle’s performance, they certainly affect its appearance.

    Professional Intervention

Side-by-side owners can cover much of the necessary maintenance on their own. That includes pre- and post-trip inspections, air filter and oil changes, battery upkeep, and cleanings. Of course, that doesn’t make professional intervention any less important. Professional service from a certified technician is essential for making a UTV last longer and keeping it running at its best. Professionals can conduct in-depth inspections and find potential issues that might be overlooked by an untrained eye. They can also help to ensure a UTV is as safe as possible for its users.

Getting the Most Life Out of a Side-by-Side

Side-by-sides are built tough. They’re designed to handle off-road hazards and constant use. That doesn’t mean they don’t require upkeep. Ongoing maintenance and certain upgrades can help keep them in top-notch condition so they’ll last longer and offer optimal performance. Installing an aftermarket roll cage can help protect these vehicles from the outside. That added reinforcement will keep damage at bay while also protecting the vehicle’s occupants.

Beyond that, taking good care of a machine like this will guarantee its safety and longevity. Side-by-sides should be inspected before and after each trip. Change the oil and keep the air filter clean. Perform battery maintenance as needed, and keep moving parts lubricated. Keep the vehicle clean to prevent unnecessary wear, and take it to a professional on occasion for added reassurance.
