The original FMA is somewhat more dramatic than the Brotherhood and very different from the Manga.
If we look at the ending part of both, we will see the two anime series end up quite differently. The original FMA ends up in the movie Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala. Edward and his brother Alphonse leave their world and are stuck in our world. There is no way to get back. They have already sealed the Gate of Truth to prevent anyone from getting in or going out.
On the other hand, The Brotherhood sticks with the storyline of the Manga, which ends up with Edward sacrificing his ability to use alchemy in exchange for the body of Alphonse.
In short, we can say that, while both the anime series are great watches, they have their fair share of differences. The original Fullmetal Alchemist anime was created when the original Manga was in its early development stages. That is why the Brotherhood follows the main events of the Manga. So its storyline coincides with the storyline of Manga.
The Brotherhood is longer than the original, with 64 episodes and more life-like, considering Brotherhood features more advanced animation than the original FMA. But there are still some aspects of the original FMA that make it better than the Brotherhood.
Despite this, both FMA series boast some high-quality art with a great choice of colors and vivid backgrounds. The Brotherhood features considerably advanced and better animation than the original. Brotherhood is alive with details in everything.
We suggest, if you can, watch both, original first and then Brotherhood. If you only want to watch one, then watch Brotherhood only. Most people prefer Brotherhood.
